Science Day 3 - GOO!

Today we experimented with goo!

Each of my girls got three bowls.  I put a scoop of flour, cornstarch, and cornmeal in each bowl.

One at a time, I poured about a half cup f water in.  I had the girls mix it and see what happened.

The flour/water combo made a sticky mess!  Kind of like a bread dough that needs a lot more flour!

Cornmeal just turned into a baby food-like substance.  My little one thought it looked disgusting and wouldn't even touch it!

Third, we mixed water with cornstarch.  This one was the awesome, and amazing GOO!  One cup of cornstarch mixed with 1/2 cup water makes a quicksandy substance.  It was quite strange!  You could roll it up in a ball but as soon as you stopped it would rip off your hand.  It was crazy!  I think I may have enjoyed it more than my girls!  My oldest, K, eventually got into it and enjoyed playing with it and trying to figure it out.  My little one, E, would not touch it with her hands at all!  She refused! 

Next, we whipped up a couple batches of homemade play-dough.

Super easy!  There are tons of recipes out there.

We used:

1 C boiling water

1 C Flour

1/2 C Salt

2 T Cream of Tartar

1 T Oil

Couple of drops of food coloring

Mix everything but the water together and *carefully* pour water into the dry mix.

Mix first with a spoon, then after it cools down a bit get your hands dirty!

Today was all about mixing different things and discovering the outcome.  We talked about solids and liquids and why the playdough worked but the water/flour mix didn't.

It was a fun afternoon!
